As reported by CNN on Monday (08/06/2018), in the first three hours on Sunday (5/8) or starting around 01:30 local time, at least 30 people were shot in 10 separate incidents in the city of Chicago. Two of them were killed in the shooting incident.
“The city of Chicago had a hard night,” said the local Patrol Bureau Chief, Fred Wallers, in a statement.
“Some of these incidents (shootings) were deliberately targeted and some related to conflicts between gangs in these areas,” he added.
In one incident, Waller said, the perpetrators opened fire on a crowd of people attending a street party. Police records call the wounded victim 62 years old as the oldest and 11 years as the youngest.
Until Sunday (3/8) at 14:00 local time, the number of shooting victims was 44 people with a total of five of them killed.
The shooting in Chicago also flared on Friday (3/8) and Saturday (4/8). Six recorded shootings occurred throughout Friday (3/8), but there were no fatalities. On Saturday (4/8) there were 15 shootings that occurred, with one fatality.
The city of Chicago has been struggling with high levels of shootings and killings in recent years.
But Waller said that the number of shooting cases decreased 30 percent compared to 2017 and the number of murder cases decreased 25 percent. For at least 15 consecutive months until last June, shooting and murder cases have declined in Chicago.
But on June 25, at least 21 people were shot in Chicago and two of them were killed. Criminal experts call crime acts likely to increase during the summer.
