Sharapova played three sets against fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko at the All England Club in London on Tuesday (3/7/2018). Despite winning the opening set, he eventually lost 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 4-6.
This is the worst result that Sharapova got in participating in Wimbledon. Champion in 2004 that never before failed to pass the first round.
Sharapova was not the only former champion who crashed out in the first half. Petra Kvitova, 2011 and 2014 champions, also had to lift the suitcase after losing from Aliaksandra Sasnovich with the score 4-6, 6-4, 0-6.
Top seed Simona Halep qualified for the second round after beating Kurumi Nara 6-2, 6-4. Halep will next play against China’s Zheng Saisai.
Garbine Muguruza also made it through the first half. The third-seeded Spaniard beat Naomi Broady 6-2, 7-5 and will face Alison van Uytvanck in the second round.
