Oscar nominations were released today. There were actually a few surprises. Martin McDonagh was not nominated for best director, giving me hope that his 3 Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri will NOT win best picture in spite of its momentum from other awards ceremonies. The director category is loaded, with huge established names (Nolan, Del Toro, Anderson) next to newcomers Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig.
Phantom Thread over performed prognostications, grabbing nominations for best picture, best actor, best director, and best supporting actress. That pleased me. I may have stopped short of giving it 4 stars, but it is a really good film and much better and more artful than paint by number prestige films such as Darkest Hour or The Post. I, Tonya was not nominated for best picture in spite of also being far superior to those films.
I will be writing an Oscars article at some point prior to the ceremony where I will do a “Who will win, who should win” kind of deal. In other Imitating Life news, I will be seeing Lady Bird for a second time today and should have a review up by the end of the week. So to those of you whom I promised a LB review prior to this blog even existing (Lynnae Day, David Casey, Miriam Vigil), better late than never, right?
