In the match of the inaugural weekend held at Mapei Stadium on Monday (08/20/2018) morning WIB, Inter appeared dominant with 62 percent ball possession. They also made eight attempts but only three on target.
Meanwhile, Sassuolo only makes five attempts with two on target. One of them resulted in a Domenico Berardi penalty goal midway through the first half.
The only goal made Sassuolo win three points and Inter had to go home empty-handed. Inter are now 18th, while Sassuolo is fifth.
The Way of the Match
Acting as host, Sassuolo immediately took the initiative to attack and they had pressed Inter early in the match. In the third minute, Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic had to brush aside Bourabia’s powerful strike from close range.
Inter continue to be under pressure from Sassuolo. In the 13th minute, the hosts had two chances to just miss the goals, from Bourabia and Alfred Ducan.
Inter’s first chance was obtained in the 20th minute when their counter-attack was directed at Mauro Icardi in the Sassuolo penalty box. Icardi, who has an opposing player, is still able to fire a shot from a narrow angle but Andrea Consigli can be pushed over.
Sassuolo got a penalty in the 27th minute when Di Francesco’s acceleration forced Miranda to drop it in the forbidden box. Berardi who advanced as an executor successfully netted the Inter goal and led his team to a 1-0 lead.
Despite mastering the game, Inter were unable to make a deadly attack and Icardi had to work hard to find the ball. Lautaro Martinez which was installed as trequartista was still “shocked” by Serie A.
Until halftime, the score 1-0 persisted for Sassuolo’s lead.
To increase the intensity of the attack, Inter played Ivan Perisic replacing Dalbert who performed poorly in the first round.
Three minutes after coming on, Perisic almost broke Sassuolo’s net but his volley was wide of the target.
For an hour the game was running, Politano released a left foot kick from outside the penalty box but the ball was still off the mark. Inter look frustrated because of the difficulty of dismantling the Sassuolo defense.
Sassuolo got a chance in the 66th minute through Kevin-Prince Boateng. Unfortunately Boateng’s strike hit the outside post of Inter’s goal.
A minute later it was Inter’s turn to reply when Perisic crossed the cross to the near post and Icardi greeted him, but the ball floated over the bar.
Inter play again the new player, Keita Balde, to dismantle the Sassuolo defense. But Keita’s presence is still difficult to give effect to Inter’s game.
In the 80th minute Marcelo Brozovic executed a free kick and the ball headed into the penalty box which was greeted by De Vrij’s header, but it went wide.
Entering injury time, Inter had a golden opportunity. Politano’s free kick from the left side was forwarded by De Vrij with his head, but Consigli was able to block the ball from close range.
The match ended with a 1-0 win for Sassuolo.
